Birmingham and Tuscaloosa area

Service areas

We cover Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and the suburbs around them. Each city page carries what is local to it: the roofing pressure, the storm history, and how the FORTIFIED programs apply.

The one thing that changes city to city is who issues the permit and runs the inspection, and that is decided by your address, not your roofer. The table below points each city to its office. The FORTIFIED standard, the insurance discount, and the grant work the same in every one of them. See how we make money for the plain version of how this site is paid for.

Cities covered, and who permits your re-roof

City County Local permit note
Birmingham Jefferson The county seat. City-limit re-roofs are permitted through Birmingham Planning, Engineering and Permits.
Hoover Jefferson and Shelby Straddles two counties, but one city office permits the whole city: Hoover Building Inspections.
Tuscaloosa Tuscaloosa The county seat, west of the metro. A re-roof is Exterior Envelope work at Tuscaloosa Building and Inspections.
Vestavia Hills Jefferson On Red Mountain, south of Birmingham. A permit and inspection run through Vestavia Hills Building Safety.
Trussville Jefferson and St. Clair A fast-growing two-county suburb. City-limit work goes through the City of Trussville Building Department.
Bessemer Jefferson (Bessemer Division) Western Jefferson County, the Bessemer Cutoff, with its own county courthouse division.

Statewide, Alabama requires a residential roofer license from the Home Builders Licensure Board for residential roofing work valued over $2,500, so ask any bidder in any of these cities for a current license number. Each city page carries its cost context and local detail in full.

The money layers, metro-wide

The reason this site leads with the FORTIFIED standard is that Alabama attaches money to a stronger roof, and it applies across every city here. State law, Ala. Code Title 27, Chapter 31D, requires property insurers to offer a premium discount for a home built to the FORTIFIED standard on a policy that provides wind coverage, a discount that can attach to the wind portion of the premium or to the total premium where the insurer does not break out wind separately in its rate filing, and the Strengthen Alabama Homes grant may be offered to approved owners toward the upgrade in funding rounds organized by county. This site publishes no grant amount, cap, or application date, and it does not track which counties are open. The program's own page, linked below, is the current source.

The Strengthen Alabama Homes grant, administered by the Alabama Department of Insurance, may be offered to approved Alabama homeowners toward a FORTIFIED roof. It runs in funding rounds organized by county. What it may cover, who qualifies, and when applications are open all change, so this site publishes no figures for it. Check current terms at strengthenalabamahomes.com.

How the three layers stack, and the cost math behind the FORTIFIED upgrade, are in the FORTIFIED and grant guide. To compare the work itself, browse the services.

What it costs, and what happens after you send the form

What does a roof cost in the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa area?
A typical 2,000 square foot asphalt re-roof runs roughly $7,600 to $16,000 in the Birmingham metro, per a Birmingham roofing cost index. Tuscaloosa is a separate roofing market and no local index is published for it, so treat that figure as the nearest published reference rather than a Tuscaloosa price. The FORTIFIED upgrade on top of a replacement runs about $1,000 to $3,000 per IBHS sample estimates and contractor pricing, with a separate third-party evaluator fee of roughly $300 to $600 per project. A repair rather than a replacement runs $300 to $7,000 by severity, per a national cost guide. These are published estimates to weigh bids against, not quotes and not our prices.
How fast will someone get back to me?
Your request goes to an independent, licensed local roofing contractor, usually within about an hour during the day. That contractor then contacts you to look at the roof and price the work on their own schedule.
What work is covered?
Roof replacement, FORTIFIED roof installation, metal roofing, roof repair, storm damage repair, and roof inspection for insurance. See every service.

Only a contractor standing on your roof can price the actual job.
